 Who We Are

See the potential in every project

About Hummingbird Metal Works

Hummingbird Metal Works was founded in 2016 by Greg Marshall, a skilled carpenter. After seeing a need for stronger, more durable, and more flexible materials than wood on building projects, Greg was inspired to start incorporating steel and aluminum into his designs.

Beginning with gates and railings, Hummingbird Metal Works soon expanded into more customizable pieces including canopies, arbors, architectural pieces, fireplace screens and toolsets, commissioned art pieces, furniture, and more. Using hand forging, we go beyond typical fabrication capabilities and deliver even more custom options to our clients.

Today, Hummingbird Metal Works combines innovative metal fabrication, traditional blacksmithing techniques, and our artistic vision to produce pieces not found in conventional fabrication studios. No matter how out of the box your idea is, we have the skills and vision to make it happen.

Meet Greg

“I never want to forget or be too far from the natural world.”

Greg began his career in the automotive industry before spending a stretch in the broadcast television industry. In the early 2000s, he left corporate America to move to the construction world. After doing some remodeling work for a successful welding company, Greg became fascinated with the steel fabrication and welding process.

“The strength, flexibility, and creative possibilities that these metals have to offer to create freeform, unique pieces is hard to match.”

Greg decided to train in blacksmithing at the John C. Campbell folk school completed the steel fabrication and welding program at CPCC in 2016 before founding Hummingbird Metal Works. He lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, and has found his passion operating the Hummingbird Metal Works studio full-time.

Greg is an avid outdoorsman. He took five months away from metal fabrication to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail in 2021. He also rode his gravel bike 3,000 across The Great Divide Bike Trail from Jasper, Alberta Canada to the Mexican border in 2023.

“I love nature and the outdoors. I am always looking to add natural design elements to my pieces. I never want to forget or to be too far from the natural world. It’s important to consider this aspect in my work.”
